The name Thailand
means Land of the Free. It is located in central southeast Asia. Thailand is
about three-fourths the size of the state of Texas with a population of
about 68 million people. Approximately 86% of the people live in small rural
villages. Over 75% of the people of Thailand are Thai, 16% are Chinese.
There are a number of tribes (Meo, Lahu, Tin, Lisu, Akha, Karen, Shan) that
live in the hills along the borders and on the high mountain ridges. The
number of these remote people is about 500,000. The principal religion of
Thailand is Buddhism. 96% of the population call themselves Buddhist.

There are also a small percentage of Muslim and
Hindu and only about 1% are Christian. |
